University Hospitals, Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow and Ayr a further 19 miles South. The total catchment population is around 375,000.The posts will commence in7th August 2024.

Applications are invited from doctors for the position of CDF in Peri-operative Medicine in NHS Ayrshire and Arran who, by August 2024, will have successfully completed Foundation Year 2 training. This post would also be suitable for those candidates who have completed the UK Internal Medicine or Core Medical Training Programme or its equivalent and are looking to apply for Higher Specialist Training in Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Anaesthetics.

The aim of this innovative post is to provide development opportunities for the post-holders, while supporting our key service areas in relation to the provision of clinical care by a trained doctor workforce.  The post will provide experience in the management of acutely unwell patients and management of chronic disease in the surgical patient population. There will be significant opportunity for QI and service development and although not recognised for training, these posts, are structured to allow post-holders the opportunity to further develop their speciality career.

This post is likely to appeal to applicants:

  • Wishing to enter medical IMT training / higher speciality training. This post will provide valuable opportunities to build your CV to allow competitive advantage at medical interviews as many of the curriculum items will be addressed and additional supporting factors such as QI, audit, service development, teaching and leadership and management.
  • Wishing to enter anaesthetics training. Perioperative medicine is now part of the anaesthetics curriculum and a developing speciality field. The opportunity to work as part of the anaesthetics team as well as the development time in theatre and ICU will be very valuable at application and interview stages.
  • Seeking further experience in medical specialties and working towards completing MRCP examinations. The medical team are keen to provide teaching and to support candidates through the PACES/MRCP examinations. Given the broad range of medical specialities available at University Hospital Ayr and University Hospital Crosshouse, there are extensive learning opportunities to facilitate this.

Within this post there will also be opportunity to improve on relevant procedural skills, develop specialist procedural skills and work closely with affiliated teams including AHPs, pain service. Within the constraints of service requirements, we will tailor the job to suit your requirements.

During the tenure of the appointment post-holders will have a minimum of 4 -8 hours per week development time and access to a £1250 study budget (pro rata), to support them with the attainment of their career aims.

A 40% pay banding supplement will be paid to recognise contribution to out of hours working  and the core salary will be will be based on a salary range of £40,995 - £64,461. The posts are not recognised for national training.   Applicants must hold Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice by the time of appointment and have a minimum of 12 months paid NHS Work experience.
