Post:  consultant IN VASCULAR SURGERY

Applications are invited for the position of Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC)/NHS Forth Valley (FV) Health Boards. The post will be based within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (Glasgow). In February 2019 the vascular surgical departments of NHS GGC and FV amalgamated. The catchment population for this service is approximately 1.5 million. Consultants work across all major acute hospital sites covering outpatient clinics, day surgical activity and offering support to the in-patient services with both direct clinical review and emergency surgical support.


The post holder will be based in the Vascular Surgical Department of the Queen Elizabeth University hospital. We operate a consultant of the week on call system. The on-call commitment is currently 2-weeks per 11-week cycle (this includes a first on call and then second on call commitment), to manage the volume of inpatients and off-site emergencies across NHS GGC and NHS FV.


The Job Plan will include elective clinical commitments in NHS GGC. The exact detail of the duties of the post and the timetable will be discussed with the successful candidate and agreed in line with the needs of the service, but this will include the delivery of 2 outpatient clinics and 1 all day Theatre list.


NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full-time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication, and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.

(Additional EPAs may be available by discussion and are dependent upon the needs of the service).
An essential criterion for the surgeon appointed to this post will be an academic interest. We are seeking a candidate who has demonstrated an ability to support surgeons in training through post-graduate higher degrees. The ideal candidate will a detailed and comprehensive understanding of the processes involved with Research and Development.
