Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated candidates for the full time post of Technical Manager within the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory, Glasgow (SMiRL).
The post is for an Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 7 Technical Manager position. As Technical Manger the post holder The post holder will work independently, autonomously, and unsupervised and be responsible for delegating reviewing and organising the work of his/her team in the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory.
The Technical Manager will provide reciprocal cover and support in the absence of other Technical Managers in the department in order to provide leadership to Specialist Biomedical Scientists and Clinical Support Workers within the department and ensure the continuation of service delivery. The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with the Laboratory Operational Manager to ensure effective utilisation of resources, including staff, equipment and supplies.
The successful candidate will have an MSc in Biomedical Science or hold the Fellowship of the institute of Biomedical Science (F.I.B.M.S) and must be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as Biomedical Scientist. Extensive post HCPC Registration and detailed knowledge of relevant analytical and diagnostic techniques including automated technology employed in the GG&C Microbiology Reference Laboratories is desirable e.g. experience in PCR and sequencing methods including next generation sequencing and knowledge of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and detection would be desirable.
The post is based at the SMiRL Laboratory in the New Lister Building at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A contractual shift service for weekends operates where the post holder would be expected to carry out, without supervision or the immediate on site availability of medical or technical advice, any of the tasks for which they have been trained which are necessary to be performed as part of the weekend work.
The laboratory receives approximately 30,000 request per annum which are direct referrals from every diagnostic Microbiology laboratory in Scotland and provides specialist and reference testing services for a range of pathogens. The specialist testing and the clinical advice delivered by the Department have a direct input in assisting with patient management across Scotland. The laboratory also produces valuable data which is used for surveillance purposes and during outbreak investigations to assist Public Health Scotland.
