DEPARTMENT OF TRAUMA & ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

FIXED TERM POSTS: CLINICAL FELLOW / CLINICAL TEACHING FELLOW - 6 AUGUST 2024 – 5 AUGUST 2025

NHS Tayside is pleased to announce vacancies for fixed term posts in the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Posts will be for 12 months duration, although expressions of interest for a six-month position will be actively considered. The posts will be for Clinical Fellows and will feature 100% clinical orthopaedics or for Clinical Teaching Fellows, which will feature 50% clinical duties during daytime hours and 50% commitment of time towards delivering Orthopaedic Undergraduate teaching for 2nd, 4th and 5th year University of Dundee medical students.

The appointees will gain supervised exposure to elective orthopaedic and trauma surgery through active attendance in clinics, theatres and on-call / admission roles. They will be offered the opportunity to develop an audit/research project supported by the Institute of Motion Analysis and Research in Dundee University and all three appointees will be supported to help in the delivery of teaching to Undergraduate Medical Students from the University of Dundee, although the clinical teaching fellow post will have a significantly larger teaching commitment.

The NHS Tayside Trauma & Orthopaedic Service is delivered from three main hospitals. Trauma patients are currently admitted to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. This is a Level 2 Trauma Centre, where T&O colleagues form a large part of the Major Trauma team and attend all trauma calls. Elective services together with additional fracture clinics are delivered at Perth Royal Infirmary, Perth and Stracathro Hospital, Brechin.  All three hospitals are affiliated with the University of Dundee Medical School and undergraduate students are embedded in all of our clinical activities.

The appointees will mainly be based in the Trauma Unit in Ninewells Hospital Dundee. They will have on-call duties and out of hours duties as part of a junior tier of a two-tier middle grade registrar trauma rota. They will also be expected to be able to work flexibly between sites to undertake both their on-call duties and to attend the other two centres supporting other trauma and elective activity.
