Trainee Health Visitor (Annex 21)*
One year fully funded training, commencing in September 2024, facilitated by NHS Borders and Queen Margaret University (QMU.
An exciting opportunity for experienced nurses and midwives who are keen to pursue a career in health visiting and improve outcomes for children and their families. Successful applicants will commit to a fixed term post that entails one-year of full-time study to undertake the Post Graduate Diploma in Person Centred Practice: Health Visiting (level 11) at QMU, Edinburgh, alongside practice placement in NHS Borders. On successful completion of the programme and registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, you will be able to apply for permanent employment as a Band 7 health visitor.
To apply you must:
- Be an experienced nurse or midwife currently on the NMC register
- Be free to undertake full time study commencing September 2024
- Have the required academic credit rating/or evidence of recent study

Academic criteria overview:
Degree obtained within last 5 years | = meets criteria |
Degree older than 5 years + level 11 study within last 5 years | = meets criteria |
Degree older than 5 years and no level 11 study. 1500-word essay if selected | = meets criteria |
Degree older than 10 years + level 11 study in past 5 years | = meets criteria |
No degree + level 11 study in past 5 years | = meets criteria |
Degree and/or level 11 study older than 10 years requires discussion with QMU and an agreed outcome prior to applying |
- The supporting statement in your application must include; your understanding of the health visiting role and evidence of appropriate transferable skills, experience and supporting CPD activity, including band 7 leadership and caseload management plus your motivation and rationale for applying to become a health visitor and to study at master’s level.
- Please ensure that one of the two references requested is your current line manager
- Trainees follow the University calendar for all holidays during the course and cannot take leave out with this. Normal NHS leave is suspended during training.
This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.

*Please note this is a Trainee post, therefore Annex 21 applies*
For trainees covered by Annex 21 where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:
- up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
- more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
- more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
- more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.
