Job Advert

The Aberdeen Centre for Reproductive Medicine (Aberdeen Fertility Centre) provides a broad range of fertility treatments and is internationally recognised for its research. The centre is licenced by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and is certified to ISO 15189:2012 and ISO 9001:2015. The centre has been providing patients in Grampian, Highland, Orkney and Shetland with a full range of fertility services for over 35 years. We perform approximately 500 fresh cycles of IVF/ICSI per year along with around 400 frozen embryo transfers. We also provide a fertility preservation service.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a National NES (NHS Education for Scotland) Trainee Clinical Embryologist to join our outstanding team based in the Fertility Centre.  This is a National Training post designed to lead to registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC). The Trainee Embryologist will work as part of the scientific team, working under direct supervision and will support the Laboratory manager in providing a high standard of laboratory service. The post holder is expected to complete training in Reproductive Science within three years and successfully undertake the Scientific Training Programme Equivalence Assessment with the Academy for Healthcare Science and Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council once eligible.

The role would involve you working on a rotational basis providing cover in both embryology and andrology at the Aberdeen Fertility Centre working under direct supervision. You will become proficient in procedures for the assessment and treatment of infertility. These include semen analysis, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo transfer and gamete and embryo cryopreservation. What makes this role even more exciting is the prospect of playing a key part in the relocation of our unit in 2024 to its purpose-built new home in the Baird Family Hospital.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills, a team player, someone who can work independently and has good attention to detail to join our laboratory team in Aberdeen. You must also be highly dexterous too.

You must have a recognised Life Science degree awarded at a 2:2 or above and a related MSc or PhD is essential.

As a trainee embryologist, you will be expected to apply your appropriate scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the required professional level for the provision of a high quality service to patients. You will be expected to perform all duties in accordance with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990) and the Code of Practice issued by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and Association of Reproductive & Clinical Scientists.
