The role of the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate is to protect the people of Scotland from infectious and environmental hazards; enable high-quality clinical and public health knowledge, research and innovation; and change clinical and public health practice by using audits at a national and local level.
The Post:
An opportunity has arisen in the Public Health Microbiology team within the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate of PHS. The work of the Public Health Microbiology Team aids the coordinated detection of infectious diseases, characterises microbial pathogens and their variants efficiently and effectively, to support effective outbreak/pandemic management, treatments and interventions, all within PHS ambitions to reduce the public health burden in Scotland.
The post holder will be an enthusiastic, flexible individual who shall work closely with Clinicians, scientific, data management and service delivery staff as part on the Public Health Microbiology team to contribute to expert advice, guidance and developments in microbiology services to support surveillance data, epidemiological analyses, incident response, information products, business process or change initiatives. The post holder shall have the opportunity to work with a range of policy makers, reference laboratories and public health/health protection service providers and stakeholders across all sectors in Scotland and beyond to support delivery of the Public Health Microbiology (PHM) Strategy and the Pathogen Genomics Strategy for Scotland.
The Candidate:
You will work as part of a small scientific team of healthcare scientists, working collaboratively with colleagues internal and external to the organisation to contribute to initiatives to support delivery of the Public Health Microbiology Strategy for Scotland (2018).
Location and Working Pattern:
This post will be based in Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow.
Please note that PHS will be relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow in September 2024.
PHS operate a hybrid working model with a mixture of working at home and days in the office each week.
There will be an expectation to travel to local areas for some meetings and events.
Work pattern - Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week however PHS supports flexible working and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.
During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.
It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
