What you will do:
An exciting opportunity has risen for a Band 6 Registered Mental Health or Learning Disability Nurse to join HMP Kilmarnock’s Multidisciplinary Mental Health team. You will ensure that a comprehensive Mental Health Service is delivered over a seven day period. As a Registered Mental Health or Learning Disability Nurse, you will be an integral member of Prison Healthcare Management team, be educated to degree level or have the relevant equivalent experience related to the job purpose.
This will be a diverse and challenging role, providing mental health care to a vulnerable population, many of whom have suffered significant trauma. You will be responsible for the direct line management of a team of Registered Mental Health, Learning Disability Nurses and support staff. You will support the Clinical Team Leader and Clinical Service Manager alongside the Addiction Charge Nurse and Charge Nurses (Adult Nursing).
You will form part of an extensive Multidisciplinary Mental Health Team working alongside Nursing Colleagues, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists. This MDT will be strengthened by the recruitment of a Clinical Associate in Applied Psychologist, a mental health practitioner and self-help workers.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required to do the job:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse, currently registered with the NMC.
- Significant experience in mental health
- To demonstrate experience of line managing other staff.
- To demonstrate knowledge and skills that will allow them to deliver leadership responsibilities in a complex healthcare environment
- Awareness of prison needs in relation to Primary Care, Mental Health and Addicitons support and ability to work across these areas.
- Evidence of continuing professional development to postgraduate level
- Postholder will have well developed written and verbal communication skills and record accurate consultation data in prisoners health care records in accordance with the latest NMC guidelines and other pertinent standards.
- Ability to work independently and unsupervised, within a busy and demanding workplace, whilst maintaining a role within part of a multi disciplinary team.
- Ability to treat prisoners in custody with respect and dignity at all times even under conditions of duress.

Hours:
37 hours per week
expected to work a rotational shift pattern of 4 days over 7, including weekend, public holidays, on-call and backshifts.

From 1 April 2024, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change workers in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37.5 to 37 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran will implement this change but it may not be possible to fully transition from 1 April and there may therefore be some areas of the organisation where implementation may take longer. If the department is currently unable to safely accommodate the reduced hours from 1st April, you may be required to work 37.5 hours per week (pro rata for part-time staff) until the department can meet the requirements without impacting patient safety - you will, of course, be remunerated accordingly. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is committed to full implementation of the 37 hour working week across all areas as soon as it is safe to do so
