Job Advert
NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a progressive department situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We provide a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians throughout the NHS Highland area; specimens for the Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory and the Scottish Lyme Disease and Tick borne Infections Reference Laboratory are also received from other health boards throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland.
You will work alongside Biomedical Scientists to perform diagnostic tests and other duties that support delivery of the service. The department is divided into 3 sections: Culture (comprising bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus detection) and Serology (comprising bacterial, viral and immunology serology plus Toxoplasma and Lyme disease Reference Laboratories). The post involves rotation through sections, and once trained you will join the rota for an extended working day, weekends and public holidays as required by the department.
Applicants must have an HND in Biomedical Science or SVQ 3/HNC with experience as a Laboratory Support Worker, or IBMS Certificate of Achievement part 2, or relevant science degree. You should also have extensive experience of practical laboratory work, preferably in an ISO15189 accredited diagnostic setting. This should include evidence of following written protocols and procedures. You must also possess excellent communication skills and be fully computer literate.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
