Public Health Intelligence - making a difference to health inequalities in Scotland

We are recruiting two permanent positions to the Public Health Observatory team in Public Health Scotland. We use our expertise in epidemiology, data analysis and statistics, and the communication of complex information to shape action on health inequalities. In the first instance, a portion of the work of these post will contribute to our work on understanding economic determinant of health and how to deliver an economy that supports health and wellbeing. 
Public Health Scotland is Scotland’s lead national agency for improving and protecting the health and wellbeing of all of Scotland’s people. We work in a wide range of policy areas, focusing on reducing inequalities and improving health and wellbeing in Scotland.
The Public Health Observatory Team is made up of colleagues committed to reducing inequalities. We use information from a wide range of sources to better understand the health of the Scottish population and the factors that affect it. We communicate our work in a variety of ways, such as through reports, briefings and presentations. Our work frequently gets media coverage, allowing us to promote key messages widely. Our work programmes adapt to the needs; some of the challenges we are currently working on include:
•    Understanding economic determinant of health and how to deliver an economy that supports health and wellbeing
•    Understanding recent trends in life expectancy
•    Highlighting the impact of welfare reform on Scotland’s population
•    Monitoring Scotland’s alcohol strategy, including the flagship public health policy of Minimum Unit Pricing
•    Generating high quality information about children’s health and wellbeing 
•    Understanding and promoting public mental health 
•    Contributing to the Scottish Public Health Observatory (https://www.scotpho.org.uk/) 

These posts can be based in our Edinburgh or Glasgow offices in the long term, although the team are currently home working as a result of the pandemic. A laptop, monitor, keyboard and mouse will be supplied. 
The post-holder will lead in the provision of evidence-informed public health intelligence, ensuring that outcomes are aligned with Public Health Scotland’s objectives. They will also contribute to the overall planning and development of the team’s work, and provide advice, guidance and leadership around national data sources, to ensure that they best meet public health intelligence needs.
