What you will do:

You will act in a supporting role to Biomedical Scientist staff, assisting them in the performance of a complex range of tests with the aid of specialised equipment, in Histology, Cytology and Immunocytochemistry, in order to produce results which will aid in the diagnosis of disease, and the treatment of patients. You will be required to undertake, and successfully complete, an MLA training programme and Healthcare Support Worker Logbook. You will be expected to perform a range of duties throughout the Department, which, for example, reagent preparation, data entry, sample registration and the use of specialised equipment. Under direction from the Laboratory Manager and Departmental Training Officer, you will also assist in the training and supervision of trainee MLA staff.

Mortuary duties are also included in this post. Under the supervision of the senior APT, you will receive, record, arrange storage and release of deceased patients. You will assist the APT’s with moving and handling and other administration duties when required.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required to do the job:

You are required to be proficient in, have knowledge of, or undertake training in the following:-

  • SVQ/NVQ level 3  / HNC in Biomedical Science or other life science subject or equivalent level of experience
  • Must successfully complete the departmental MLA training program.
  • Must have an understanding of Departmental procedures and practices.
  • Specialised knowledge of decontamination, sterilisation and disinfection procedures.
  • Numeracy and keyboard skills required.
  • High standard of safety training required to handle dangerous chemicals and potentially infective samples.
