Job Advert
NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
We are looking for an individual to join our small group of three, who support the East of Scotland Research Ethics Service (EoSRES).
The East of Scotland Research Ethics Service looks after two Research Ethics Committees. Each Committee is made up of 18 volunteers, whose remit is to review research applications, protecting the dignity, safety, rights and well-being of research participants. While also working to facilitate and promote ethical research, which is of potential benefit to participants, science and society. More information on the role of Research Ethics Committees can be found at Research Ethics Service and Research Ethics Committees - Health Research Authority (hra.nhs.uk) However, please note that as a devolved nation, we do operate with small differences.
The post holder will assist researchers through the ethical review process, providing administrative support and expertise. Researchers complete an on-line application, which we check and validate. The application then goes to a Committee meeting, held via Teams, where it is discussed and the main ethical points noted and a decision reached. One of the main roles of the REC Manager is to minute the meetings, collating the main ethical issues, related discussions, further information the Committee may request and recording the Committees decisions. The applications are very varied, and your relevant knowledge of legislation and guidance would gradually increase, with support and guidance from the rest of the team. This is quite a unique post, so we are looking for transferable skills. These would include: the ability to read and understand complex information, listen carefully and accurately record and summaries issues discussed, and communicate information effectively to a diverse range of people. An aptitude for accuracy and spotting inconsistencies, while reading applications and inputting information into the electronic databases we use and due to the varied and changing daily demands of the post, the ability to prioritise workload, to meet timelines.
This is a diverse and interesting role which is difficult to fit into an advert so please e-mail if you would like further information. julie.kelly5@nhs.scot
The post is 29.7 hours a week and there is flexibility over how the hours are worked. This post is supported through re-occurring funding and is initially for 12 months.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
