Opportunities exist for pharmacists that wish to specialise in QA and gain experience within industry at NHS Scotland Pharmaceutical ‘Specials’ Service (NHSS PSS).
Applications are welcomed from registered Pharmacists. Candidates would benefit from experience and/or knowledge of GMP / GCP, pharmaceutical manufacture, aseptic dispensing or quality assurance, however this is not essential. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate(s).
This contract is for a fixed term for a period of six months as a temporary contract or secondment. The reason for the fixed term contract is to provide temporary cover on a part-time or full-time basis. It is also possible for interested candidates to work flexible hours via a bank contract.

The service is the national centre for pharmaceutical manufacture of unlicensed ‘Specials’ and Investigational Medicinal Products used in clinical trials. The facility holds numerous licenses and registrations and is supported by its own QA, purchasing, storage, distribution and sales functions.

The following range of services are provided:
Sterile products | Injections, infusions, eye drops, topicals |
Aseptic products | Eye drops and pre-filled syringes |
Non -sterile products | Ointments, creams, internal and external liquids, tablet repackaging and overlabelling, extemporaneous formulations, |
Dispensing services | Supply of medicines direct to patients homes (ScotCAP program) |
Emergency Drug Boxes | Supply to hospitals, Trauma centres, Scottish Ambulance Service |
Clinical Trials | Advice on regulatory submissions, randomisation, formulation and blinding for the above range of products |
Quality Assurance | Analytical & microbiological testing, environmental monitoring, services to Pharmacy, medical gas testing, audit and clinical governance. |
NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
