NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

National Education Scotland (NES) have provided NHS Highland with an opportunity to host a Scientist Training Programme (STP) student in Cardiac Physiology at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. This fixed term 3-year post will provide academic and practical training in the field of cardiac physiology, including specialist areas of cardiac rhythm management and echocardiography, and lead to attainment of Masters qualification in Clinical science (Cardiac). Block release style academic teaching will be provided by Newcastle University alongside peers undertaking the STP in England.

Applicants should have or be expected to achieve a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree in pure or applied science in line with entry requirements, further details available here: Further detail on entry requirements can be found at:https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/entry-requirements/. The ideal candidates will have a committed in-depth interest and enjoyment of scientific practice and its application to direct clinical care. They will have excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills as well as proven experience of self-directed learning, research and problem solving. The post is therefore ideal for a self-motivated science graduate wishing to work within the field of healthcare science, whilst living and working in one of the country’s most desirable environments.

The majority of clinical training will be provided within the cardiology department at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Raigmore is a modern District General Hospital with 500 beds and a catchment area of almost 10,000 square miles covering the entire Scottish Highlands. The cardiology team at Raigmore consists of Cardiac Physiologists, Cardiographers, Associate Practitioners, Cardiology Nurse specialists and Consultant cardiologists.  We provide a range of diagnostic investigations, including transoesophageal, transthoracic and paediatric echocardiography, Physiologist led aortic valve clinics, Exercise tolerance testing, ambulatory monitoring and tilt testing. We also provide interventional angiography with a 24/7 catheter lab service for primary intervention. We have a pacemaker and complex device implantation and follow up service. This includes visiting outlying clinics to remote populations. We have a Physiologist led ILR implant service and we are looking to expand our Physiologist led services as well as introduce new services to expand our range of diagnostic activity.

This post is also an opportunity to live and work in the Scottish Highlands, a world renowned area of outstanding natural beauty, offering a high quality of life and providing unrivalled opportunities to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities (including snow sports, hill walking, kayaking, cycling and more).

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
