Specialist Surgical Pharmacists

Band 7- 2 x 1.0 WTE (37 hours) – Permanent (one post static post in Critical Care)

£46,244 - £53,789

(Oncall, weekend and public holidays rota commitment included)


This is an exciting new opportunity to work as a team of pharmacists providing specialist clinical pharmacy service to surgical areas. These posts will support pharmacy teams in General Surgery, Critical Care, Orthopaedics and Reproductive Medicine. The post holders will have the opportunity to deputise for aseptic services manager as part of their commitment to technical services. The range of specialties offer a diverse experience whilst gaining specialist knowledge and skills. These roles will allow the pharmacists to develop their skills in training and education, service development and staff management.


These dynamic roles will allow the post holders to be supported through cross-professional collaboration to work towards/achieve core advanced pharmacist credentials. The experience and evidence have demonstrated the benefit of a rotational specialist post for both the patient and the professional development of the pharmacist.


The post holders will contribute to the development and delivery of the clinical pharmacy service in the face of emerging challenges around site capacity and patient flow. Ideally, candidates will have experience of pro-actively influencing prescribing within a clinical setting and will have gained experience working in a patient focussed environment using their knowledge and skills to improve patient care and promote optimal outcomes from medicines.


Candidates must have a Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent, must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and should have completed or have equivalent competence as mapped to the Post Registration Foundation Pharmacist Framework available at:

Aseptic- The post holders will have authorised pharmacist duties and deputise for the accountable pharmacist.  There will be opportunities to be in involved in service development and management.  The successful candidates will be given the opportunity to undertake training and development, for example, Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines, Aseptic Service for Managers to further their career in either Aseptic or Quality Assurance services.

Critical Care- The successful candidate will join our Critical Care clinical pharmacy team, where pharmacists have an established non-medical prescribing role. The post holder will work closely with members of the Critical Care multidisciplinary team to provide high quality patient care and will have valued input into the daily consultant led ward rounds.  


Clinical specialties seen within the busy general Critical Care unit include Liver and Renal Transplant Medicine, Vascular and General Surgery, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Toxicology, Gastrointestinal Medicine, Neurology and Hepatology.

General Surgery- The post holder will contribute to the development and delivery of clinical pharmacy serviced to general surgery patients.  You will work closely within a well established clinical pharmacy team and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide a high quality service.  There are numerous opportunities for non-medical prescribing especially with regards to parenteral nutrition and peri/post operative care.

Orthopaedics- The Orthopaedic unit provides high quality multidisciplinary care to patients across trauma and elective wards. The successful candidate will be joining an experienced team of independent pharmacist prescribers working alongside a range of healthcare professionals including consultant orthopaedic surgeons, consultant ortho-geriatricians, advanced nurse practitioners, arthroplasty practitioners, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The pharmacy team regularly participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, complex discharge planning and have an active role in practicing Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Reproductive Medicine- The post holder will contribute to the development and delivery of the clinical pharmacy service to our Neonatal, Obstetrics, Gynaecology patients and associated services within the Simpsons Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This would be an ideal opportunity for those seeking to develop specialist knowledge with support from senior pharmacists. The post holder will be a valued member of the multidisciplinary teams with potential opportunities for developing non-medical prescribing.
