The Clinical Laboratory Service of the Western Isles NHS Board is seeking two Biomedical Scientists to join our enthusiastic and progressive team in the Laboratory at the Western Isles Hospital, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.
The Laboratory provides a full range of diagnostic services in Haematology, Biochemistry and Microbiology. The department also provides a Blood Transfusion service and supports Point of Care testing at St Brendan’s Hospital, Uist and Barra Hospital, The Western Isles Hospital and community. The department is engaged in a modernisation program, which the post holders would be expected to participate in, under the supervision of Section Leads and the Laboratory Services Manager.
The post holders will have experience in either Blood Sciences or Microbiology. Rotations through all sections of the Laboratory will be expected once suitable training has been completed. Participation in weekend and out of hours cover is a requirement of the post.

The islands boast amazing scenery and some of the most diverse wildlife in the UK Outdoor pursuits are easily accessed, with hiking, surfing and cycling being popular pastimes.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
