Applications are invited for a 12 month Clinical Fellow (ST1/2) post in Respiratory Medicine in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.


This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training


The respiratory unit provides comprehensive facilities for patients with Respiratory Disease across a number of health boards to a total population of approximately 600,000.


There are 30 inpatient beds in the Respiratory unit located in Ward 107, Emergency Care Centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the service have also benefited from a bed base expansion of 18 beds for longer stay respiratory patients in Ward 303. It admits > 2000 patients annually. Patients are generally admitted via the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Initial Assessment (AMIA) Unit, and other in-patient units or via the Chest Clinic.


There is nurse led Respiratory Support Services (RSS) team which is involved in administration of biological treatments for Asthma, Anti-Fibrotic treatments for Pulmonary Fibrosis and oxygen assessments and reviews.


The out-patient service is predominantly based at the Chest Clinic within Clinic C at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, supported by a dedicated team of nurses who process patients. Currently there are approximately 10,000 attendances each year of which approximately 2,500 are new outpatient referrals.  There are also a number of periphery clinics supported more regionally.  Within the Chest Clinic, further specialised clinics run regularly. These include:


  • Adult Cystic Fibrosis
  • Sleep medicine & home ventilation
  • Interstitial Lung Disease
  • Tuberculosis
  • Airways Clinic (primarily Asthma)
  • Lung Cancer
  • Pleural Clinic (based in ward 107)

The post would join a vast multidisciplinary team that support the respiratory patient group across a number of sub specialty areas. Within the medical workforce specifically there are 13 Consultants in Respiratory Medicine working within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, together with Specialist Trainees in Respiratory Medicine, CMTs, GPST, FY2s, FY1s and Physicians Associates.


The standard working week is 40 hours. The pay banding for the post will reflect the working pattern in operation from your first day of taking up appointment. This will be advised to you on offer of appointment, after interview.

There are excellent connections with other British cities and the continent, flying time to London is one hour - and road and rail links to all points North and South are easily accessible. Aberdeenshire includes some of the most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm Mountain National Park and a wide range of outdoor pursuits within easy commute from the city.

Previous experience in Respiratory Medicine is desirable but not essential.
