Job Advert

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Applications are invited for a one-year Robotic Fellow in Urology post based at the Department of Urology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Scotland. The post is available from August 2025.

The post is suitable for candidates who have significant experience in Urology overseas or within the UK, and wish to progress their career further with a view to portfolio development, or overseas candidates who wish to expand their training and acquire experience of working in a high-volume tertiary referral unit in the UK.

The fellowship will include a training programme in Robotic Urological Surgery using the Da Vinci Xi dual surgical console, encompassing robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy and intra-corporeal urinary diversion, robotic partial and radical nephrectomy, and robotic pyeloplasty. A modular training approach has been adopted successfully since 2016, incorporating time on the simulator, table-side assisting and console as secondary and primary surgeon. The post-holder will also participate in the Urology middle grade on-call rota (1:7). It would be expected that the candidate would work closely with the Health Services Research Unit and Aberdeen Academic Urology to increase their academic portfolio. Aberdeen has an excellent reputation for clinical training and research, and as this is a professorial unit we would encourage the candidate to undertake some research culminating in peer-reviewed publications while in post.

Candidates must possess MBChB/MBBS and MRCS (or equivalent).

This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training, however it is ideally suited for candidates who have already obtained FRCS Urology, FEBU or equivalent overseas qualifications. As such, specialist qualifications (e.g. FRCS Urology, FEBU or equivalent) are desirable.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post).  For more information visit www.gmc-uk.org
