Job Advert

The Armed Forces and Veterans (AF&V) project are running a 6-month pilot to identify the potential need for and benefit of Veteran Peer Support Workers (VPSW) in the NHS Highland area.  The pilot will run from 1 September 2024 until 28 February 2025.  If necessary, the start date can be delayed to 1 October 2024.

The AF&V project is a 5 year project to develop NHS Highland as a more AF&V-aware healthcare provider and employer.  The team currently consists of a project manager and a community psychiatric nurse, both of whom are veterans.  The VPSW post-holders would work alongside the project manager.

The VPSW post-holders must have served in either the UK Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or be a service family member.  They will provide comprehensive support, advice, and guidance to the AF&V community regarding healthcare services as well as social, educational and welfare services across NHS Highland’s area.

There are two VPSW posts available: one VPSW will be located in North Highland, and one in South Highland / Argyll & Bute.  Although the post-holders will be mostly based from home, it would preferable for the VPSW to live in the areas that they will support.

The VPSW post-holders will work mostly from home; however, there will be a requirement to undertake occasional meetings in Inverness and a requirement to travel, which may require occasional overnight stays.

The 18.5 hours per week can be spread across 3 - 5 days, allowing for the post holder to work flexibly.

This post would suit a veteran or service family member who is interested in patient support roles within the NHS and is passionate about supporting the AF&V community.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Heath and Care Worker visa. NHS Highland is unable to provide candidates with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
