We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced registered pharmacy technician to join our pharmacy dispensary team. You will be part of the dispensary management team leading a team of core and rotational pharmacy technical and support staff. We invite applicants with post qualification knowledge and experience of dispensing services, and training and supervision of others, to join the team delivering pharmaceutical care to patients in a variety of specialities.

This is an exciting time to join our team of friendly pharmacy staff who are committed to service modernisation and developing the role of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support staff. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic leader who demonstrates a high level of professional practice and technical reasoning to implement local, regional and national strategies and work collaboratively with the wider pharmacy team and relevant teams in clinical services. This post holder will be integral in the planning, set up of a new integrated dispensary premises within the Lauriston Building that will provide a service to Lauriston Building, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and Chalmers Buildings, and the transition of the services to this new delivery model. Once the dispensary is established the post holder will also have responsibility for the clinical trials drug handling for an increasing portfolio of work including advanced investigational therapeutic medicinal products, stock accountability and ensuring appropriate drug storage and maintenance of storage temperature records within this site.

Candidates will have substantial experience as a qualified pharmacy technician, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, with a commitment to Continuous Professional Development. The post requires a National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, SVQ Level III qualification in pharmacy sciences, HN Unit: Procedures for Pharmacy Dispensary Checking Technicians or an Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician Award (provided by Buttercups or NPA, 2019 or before), HNC in Pharmacy Services Development and Management or evidence of equivalent experience. Ideally candidates should have completed Work Based Assessor qualification or be willing to work towards completion of this within 24 months of starting in post.

The job will require limited travel across hospital sites in NHS Lothian with a main base at the Lauriston Buildings and includes participation in the weekend and public holiday rotas at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
