Who We Are
As NHS Scotland's unique provider of a national tele-health and tele-care service, we are responsible for the delivery of health advice and information by telephone and online services to the population of Scotland 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. NHS 24 is a patient-focused service providing the people of Scotland with triage, advice, guidance, referral and information on health and healthcare services.
Our Regional Centres are located at Hillington, Cardonald, Clydebank, South Queensferry, Dundee and Aberdeen. This post will be based in our Cardonald Regional Centre.
The Role
Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners provide brief clinical risk and mental health and wellbeing assessment, formulation for people who may be presenting with mental health and wellbeing concerns.
Working via telephone, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners will use their experience to validate, de-escalate crisis and coach people in distress tolerance and emotional regulation strategies.
Using a range of brief psychological interventions, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners empower patients, carers and families to manage distress and crisis effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- The post holder will support the mental wellbeing and health of patients
- Promoting positive mental health and employing behavioural techniques to increase mental wellbeing using a recovery-based model of care
- Work within a health care team consisting of Clinical Service Managers, Senior Charge Nurses and Mental Health Nurse Practitioners
- As part of a national service, will support with mental health and wellbeing calls, which may be of a very diverse nature covering all clinical aspects from an infinite variety of callers, whose cultural, social and emotional diversities require acknowledging and taking into consideration during the consultation
- Work with clients experiencing a variety of mental health and wellbeing concerns via telephone. Through completing a mental health triage assessment, the post holder will provide patients with a safe and appropriate outcome
- Undertake clinical risk assessments, based on latest empirical evidence and compliant with local policies and procedures
- Maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.
- Comply with the requirements of regulatory bodies and be aware of any change in these. To maintain up to date knowledge of all relevant legislation.
- Ensure that all interventions are carried out to the highest standard and in accordance with current best evidence and related practice within the work area.
Successful applicant will demonstrate:
- Graduate level qualification or evidence of equivalent relevant experience of working at graduate level.
- Experience in relevant field of mental health and wellbeing practice
- Be able to apply evidenced-based psychological therapies relevant to the clinical service
- Evidence of carrying out assessment of needs / care planning to meet individual needs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision
- Ability to organise and respond efficiently to complex information
Our Enhanced Salary Package:
NHS 24 offers a complete benefits package, with a permanent contract on Band 5 £30,229 - £37,664* (pro rata for part-time hours).
- Basic Hourly Rate of £15.46
- Saturday / After 8pm Weekday Hourly Rate of £20.10
- Sunday / Public Holiday Hourly Rate of £24.74
*Placement on salary scale is dependent on confirmation of previous relevant NHS service.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
