Specialist Pharmacist Substance Misuse Services

Band 7

2 x (1.0wte) 37 hours – Permanent (Part-Time hours considered)

£46,244 - £53,789

NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh City, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.

The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services.  We are focussed on creating an environment where each person in the team has the opportunity to flourish, develop and make best use of their skills.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a pharmacist to join the substance misuse team in Edinburgh City. This post will provide pharmaceutical care and an independent prescribing service to the substance misuse service in Edinburgh City. These posts can accommodate two full-time post holders (1.0wte). Part-time hours will be considered.

The post holder(s) will work as a prescribing pharmacist in Substance Misuse Services - prescribing for and managing a caseload of patients suffering from opioid and alcohol addiction.  The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team across the four substance misuse hubs in Edinburgh City Centre providing pharmaceutical care and a prescribing service for this cohort of patients. There may be a requirement to travel across sites.

  • NE Recovery hub in Leith
  • NW Recovery hub in Muirhouse
  • SE Recovery hub in Spittal Street
  • SW Recovery hub in Wester Hailes

The post holder(s) will develop joint working with third sector partners Change Grow Live and Turning Point, who will provide psychosocial support to the patients of the post holders case load and support the post holder in this aspect. The post holder(s) will also work as a liaison to the local community pharmacies which support the hubs. They will provide support, development and training to the community pharmacies.  There may be opportunities for service development and research activities.

The post holder(s) will be invited to join local and national substance misuse networks and be an active member of the MDT for quality prescribing, service review, and research and audit activities.

The post holder should be an independent prescriber. Training and support within the clinical area of substance misuse will be provided. The post holder is employed within NHS Lothian and there may be a requirement to work flexibly across Lothian to meet service demands. Candidates must have a Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent and must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and should have completed or have equivalent competence mapped to the RPS post-registration foundation pharmacist curriculum

Ideally, candidates will have experience pro-actively influencing prescribing within a secondary care environment, and will have gained experience working in a patient focused environment using their knowledge and skills to improve patient care and promote optimal outcomes from medicines.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Recruiting Board.

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
