Adults with Complex and Exceptional Needs Service (ACENS)

Exciting opportunities are available to join ACENS, a Pan Lothian Service caring for patients who require 1:1 specialised care in their own homes.  We have one full-time Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker posts available, and we are looking for passionate, caring, motivated people to join our highly skilled nursing team, helping to impact positively on the lives of our patients and their families.

We have 1x 37 hour per week post (12 month fixed term) available. Please note that this post is predominantely night shift working.

Candidates are required to have an SVQ 3 or Equivalent in Healthcare to be eligible for this role.

The ACEN service is a highly specialised nurse led service which is unique within adult healthcare in Lothian. Providing care at home to patients and their families who have exceptional and complex health care needs along with diverse and wide-ranging psychosocial issues. The care needs of the patient group demand knowledge and skills set which is patient and speciality specific.

Training

ACENS are committed to career growth and personal development, providing all staff with the appropriate training to support each patient. We work closely with other services to ensure competence and confidence prior to any staff lone working, as well as facilitating ‘buddy’ shifts to give staff the opportunities to get to know the patient.

Training opportunities we offer include, but are not limited to:

  • Basic Life Support relevant to the patient group
  • Tracheostomy and airway management
  • Ventilation training
  • Enteral feeding
  • Epilepsy care
  • Catheter and bowel management
  • Lone worker/violence & aggression training

As well as the above, patient-specific skills will be taught ‘in house’ and facilitated by a registered nurse.

We are looking for Healthcare Support Workers who

  • Ideally have current experience in a community, respiratory or neurological healthcare environment, although full training will be provided to successful candidates.
  • Are educated to HNC / SCQF level 6/7 or equivalent in a healthcare related subject, this is required for HCSWs to administer medications.
  • Are comfortable working on their own in a patient’s home with indirect support from the wider team.
  • Confident supervising newer staff and learners.
