NHS GRAMPIAN
CLINICAL FELLOW IN STROKE MEDICINE
POST REF NO: NS200650
Applications are invited for Clinical Fellow in Stroke Medicine starting in December 2024 for 12 months. This is available to doctors who have completed foundation year 2 training, equivalent or above.
The post offers clinical supervision and support for appraisal and for candidates wishing to progress into a suitable training program. Prior experience working in an Acute Stroke Unit is desirable but not essential.
The Acute Stroke Unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is a 20 bed acute unit offering a 24 hour Thrombolysis service and annually admits 900 patients per year. We currently Thrombolyse ~20% of our ischemic stroke patients (180 per year). We deliver Thrombectomy in a hub and spoke model. Our service acts a spoke hospital in the North-East and we refer patients to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, for Mechanical Thrombectomy.
We are actively involved in achieving Scottish Stroke care standards and have monthly exception report meetings. We support some island and district general hospitals with Telestroke clinics and Telethrombolysis / Thrombectomy. There are daily Neurovascular clinics Monday-Friday. We have daily availability of Carotid Ultrasound, Acute CT imaging and CT Angiography, and out-patient urgent MRI slots. We have an active research Stroke department headed by a Consultant and supported by 3 research nurses. We have good links with Neurology, Cardiology and Geriatrics departments. We have an allied 32 bed Stroke rehabilitation unit offering the opportunity to gain experience in diagnosing and treating Stroke patients from presentation to discharge.
Appointments to this post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised by the Deanery for training although they will provide excellent experience.
