Job Advert

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.

We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long-term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.

This is a rare opportunity for an experienced, talented and creative communications professional to join our award-winning communications team for a year. We are based in central Edinburgh, but hybrid working is the norm, with one or two days a week in the office.

NHS Lothian is Scotland’s second largest Health Board with a workforce of around 28,000 staff. The communications team covers the full range of activities, internal and external, of a corporate communications function so the ability to build relationships quickly and navigate a complex environment will be essential.

We are looking for someone who can evidence sound editorial judgement to bring sharp focus to a complex picture in any number of situations. You will have experience in planning and delivering impactful campaigns and the ability to manage a portfolio of responsibilities. Outstanding communication and writing skills, a solid grasp of the political context in which the NHS operates and good media relationships are a must.

You will work on a variety of projects; planning, designing and delivering communications strategies, social marketing campaigns, VIP visits and events. Providing advice and support for staff across the organisation is an important feature of this role. You will handle media enquiries, in and out-of-hours, on a rotational basis.

With a degree in PR, media communications, journalism or the equivalent ‘on the job’ experience, you will be a confident, motivated individual with the ability to nurture less experienced talent.

If you are calm under pressure, versatile and thrive on the unexpected, you can make an impact in this role working for one of the nation’s most loved but much scrutinised institutions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Please contact Fiona Murray, Executive Assistant to Judith Mackay, Director of Communications, Engagement and Public Affairs at fiona.murray@nhs.scot if you wish to arrange an informal chat about this position.

Please note: As this post is part-time the salary will be pro-rata.
