The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery in NHS Ayrshire & Arran are seeking to appoint enthusiastic individuals to assist in delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within University Hospitals Crosshouse & Ayr. The expected start date for this post is 6th August 2025.

This posts will be suited to trainees who have satisfactorily completed foundation training or can demonstrate equivalent competencies, and wish to develop skills in medical education or clinical research. Alternatively the post would suit ST3 trainees and above who wish to seek out of programme experience (who should contact their Deanery at the earliest juncture).

The Clinical Teaching Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching Orthopaedics to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidates will spend approximately 8-12 hours per week on a mixture of bedside teaching and facilitated tutorials in the Education Centres. Pursuit of a qualification in medical education is encouraged and fully funded. A regular contribution to the foundation year teaching programme (F1 and F2) will also be expected.

Funding towards a medical education qualification (for example, a post graduate certificate in medical education) will be made available. Alternatively successful candidates may opt to undertake their own portfolio of development aligned to their personal needs and career aspirations. Where an appointee decides not to enrol in the certificate course in medical education, up to £1,250 will be made available to support funding of personal development activities, which must be agreed with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director of Medical Education.

For those candidates NOT wishing to undertake a PG cert funding of up to £1250 will be made available to support professional development such as attendances at course.

This post has a commitment to day time clinical duties (usually 16 - 24 hours per week, dependent on teaching commitments, worked flexibly). During periods when students are not present in the hospital there will be an increased clinical attachment. The intention of the clinical experience is to develop the candidate’s knowledge and clinical skills and to support a future application for core or higher specialist surgical training. Training opportunities will be shared with doctors in nationally appointed training grade posts. The clinical element of the post may be based in the orthopedic departments at University Hospital Crosshouse or Ayr.

You must be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed foundation or equivalent training. Evidence of an interest in, and an aptitude for teaching would be advantageous. As the successful candidate will be required to teach Orthopaedics, experience in Trauma & orthopaedics at postgraduate Level is desirable for this post.

The successful applicant would be teaching at both Ayr and Crosshouse Hospitals and will need to travel between sites. For this reason, possession of a UK driving licence with access to a car is an essential criteria for this post.

If you do not meet the essential criteria which is full GMC Registration with a licence to practice and 12 months paid NHS experience, then you will not be shortlisted for this post.
