Salary: £96,990 - £107,154
___________________________________________________________________
A Specialist position in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care is available working at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, located in the south of Scotland to join an established team of (15) full and less than full time Consultants, 7 Specialty Doctors as well as Clinical Teaching and Development Fellows and trainees. This post is for a fixed term of 1 year initially but may be extended depending on service requirements. We would welcome applicants with a special interest in Intensive Care Medicine although other subspecialty interests could be accomodated. The Anaesthetic Department at the newly built hospital, which opened in December 2017, offers excellent facilities. The main theatre complex consists of 8 operating theatres and 4 endoscopy/minor procedure rooms. The operating theatres include a dedicated obstetric theatre; 3 UCV (laminar flow) theatres; 2 integrated (laparoscopic theatres) and 1 theatre designed with the capability to install fixed radiological equipment. Each theatre has an anaesthetic room.
The Critical Care Unit is located adjacent to the operating theatres and above the Emergency Department. There is a 17 bed combined Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit with 16 individual rooms
The Specialist post will comprise 10 Programmed Activities, with a split of 9:1 between Direct Clinical Care PAs and Supporting Professional Activities as standard, but the balance can be agreed with the successful person prior to commencement of the post and is subject to annual job plan review as non clinical commitments increase. A minimum of 1 SPA will reflect activities such as appraisal, personal audit, professional development (out with study leave) and teaching. Additional SPAs can be negotiated for any other non-clinical roles candidates want to consider taking up. Up to 2 Additional clinical PAs may be offered. The department has a strong history of contributing to work at hospital and national level, and participation in multicentre research.
You will participate in a 1:12 3rd on call rota and a 1:12 4th on call rota (along with another consultant each night) with compensatory time off after 3nd on call duties. Oncall intensity is low, and accounts for 2 clinical PAs a week. Regular educational and research meetings are held locally, and the department participates in national education events via video conferencing. Generous funded study leave is available.
The Department is accredited for basic and intermediate level training in Intensive Care Medicine and is heavily involved in Critical Care and Resuscitation teaching with ALERT, APLS, ALS, SCOTTIE courses all being run from the well-equipped Education and Resuscitation Training Centre at DGRI.
Applicants should have full GMC registration with a license to practice. You will be part of an on call rota and require to have the competencies and experience across all anaesthesia sub-specialties, particularly Intensive Care, Obstetrics and Paediatrics. Before the interview stage applicants may be requested to complete a self assessment form which will be used in the shortlisting process. A subspecialty interest in Intensive Care is desirable although other subspeciality interests could be accommodated. The department is well-equipped with IT facilities and desks in the offices, which are located adjacent to the Critical Care and Operating theatres, also with excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
This is a great opportunity to join a well-equipped department and work in a beautiful location in Scotland. There are huge opportunities to develop your special interests and be part of the wider Scottish network. Dumfries is a lovely town, ideally located for outdoor activities and a fabulous place for families. The crime rates are low, schools are excellent and the housing is affordable. The area is easily linked to the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, or travel south into the north of England.
