Post: Chief Nurse - Adult Children and Families, Older Peoples Services
Salary: Agenda for Change Band 9: £117,732 - £122,831 per annum (pro rata for part time)
Tenure: Permanent
Hours: 37 hours

The post holder will provide strategic nursing leadership to help deliver the objectives of Glasgow City HSPC and across the other five partner HSCPs with respect to hosted services. The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Board Nurse Director and operationally to Glasgow City HSCP Chief Officer to implement a range of programmes and initiatives designed to support the delivery of high quality healthcare.
The post holder will report to the Chief Officer and as the most senior nurse in Glasgow City HSCP and professional member of the Glasgow City HSCP Integrated Joint Board the post holder will provide specific professional advice to the board and will participate in the corporate governance and general business of the board. The post is aligned with medical/clinical directors within the HSCP and primary care/GP services.
The post holder will be required to lead, inspire, direct and promote systemic improvements in Clinical Care and Healthcare Quality to the nursing staff within the HSCP and across the other five partner HSCPs with respect to hosted services, and foster a culture which values continuing professional development and strives for excellence in all aspects of the delivery of patient safety and care. In addition the post holder will lead and direct the ongoing programme of change requiring the continuous development of a governance framework and set of clinical standards which ensures the highest level of patient safety and delivers consistency, equity and continuity of healthcare across the HSCP.
The post holder will provide visible professional leadership, influence and deliver change across the HSCP ensuring that national and local requirements are delivered timeously and to the highest agreed quality standard.
The Chief Nurse will be responsible for the clinical leadership of all Nurses and Health Visitors within Glasgow City HSCP. This role also includes GGC wide leadership and oversite for a number of additional services hosted by Glasgow City on behalf of all other HSCP’s. In total this includes leadership and oversite for:
- District Nursing
- Health Visiting
- School Nursing
- Learning Disability Nursing
- Complex needs Services including homelessness
- Specialist Children’s Nursing Services
- Sexual Health Nurses (hosted service)
- Mental Health Nursing (hosted)
- Addictions Nursing (hosted)
- Prison Nursing ( hosted service)
- Police Custody Nursing ( hosted service)
- FNP (hosted)
The post holder will work with the Chief Nurses and SMT to support delivery of:-
- Excellence in Care and implementation of Care Assurance System (CAS)
- HEI prevention and control measures,
- Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act 2019
- Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP)
- Person Centred Care
- Patients Right Act
- Future care improvement and development programmes
- The Nursing 2030 Vision for Scotland
- Unscheduled Care Services
Glasgow City HSCP hosts a system wide leadership arrangement which provides strategic clinical leadership and planning support to all adult services which includes mental health in-patient services Specialist MH Services such as Adult Eating Disorders, Perinatal Mental Health, Crisis and Unscheduled Care Mental Health Services, Addictions and Older Peoples Mental Health in-patient and community ) across the health board area.
The post holder provides specialist clinical and professional nursing leadership in these areas, working alongside the Chief Officer, Associate Medical Director, Assistant Chief officer for Adult Services and Chief Nurse Adult services and others to ensure a robust system wide approach to clinical governance and adult health service planning.
Applicants are required to be a NMC Registered Nurse or Midwife, with relevant post registration qualifications, holding a first Degree and Master’s Degree.
Comprehensive strategic knowledge and experience of NHS Health and Social Care systems is required along with significant senior nurse/leadership management experience in the NHS or another complex multi- disciplinary public or private sector complex organisation working at or close to Board level.
Applicants are required to possess significant and demonstrable track record of success in strategic planning, service improvement and monitoring of high quality standards of care and the patient experience, in the planning and delivery of successful organisational change and in proactive partnership working internal and external to the organisation.
Experience of shaping strategic direction redesign of clinical services is requited and a high level of interpersonal and technical skills to deliver a high level, strategic and operational performance, combining this with visible and professional leadership within the HSCP’s and across NHSGG&C.
Applicants must be able to evidence an ability to lead by example and function in such a way that they demonstrate the 6 caring behaviours at all times and have substantial experience of staff management/development and multidisciplinary working at peer level.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
