Return to Practice Nursing Programme

This programme is an exciting collaboration with NHS Lothian (NHSL) and Glasgow Caledonian University, delivering an employer-led model for Return to Practice, enabling previously registered adult and mental health nurses to return to the NMC register.

You will have access to a blend of online and face-to-face learning and teaching and undertake a practice learning experience within NHSL to refresh your knowledge and skills to enable you to return to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register.

You will be recruited to the programme jointly by NHSL and Glasgow Caledonian University. Your programme fees will be paid in full and you will be employed as a nursing return to practice student by NHSL throughout the return to practice programme and paid at Agenda for Change band 4.

You will complete a total of 300 or 450 hours of practice which will be dependent on the length and circumstances for the lapse of your registration. This will be discussed individually and agreed with each candidate at interview. The practice learning hours you complete each week can be flexible, full time or part time. You will be a supernumerary member of staff and be working in the capacity of a nursing student whilst undertaking the Return to Practice Programme.

Applications are invited from adult and mental health nurses only, with a lapse of registration for the Return to Practice programme commencing September 2025.

Entry requirements:

· Evidence of current NMC Statement of entry

· Declaration of any NMC Order (if relevant)

· Following successful interview, undertake and complete all required pre-employment checks

· Commitment to fulfil the programme requirements and remain within employment for a minimum of one year within NHSL

· Undertake the academic and practice elements of the programme without interruption

Our Commitment to you

· Your programme fees will be paid in full

NHS Lotthian will support you financially, meaning you will be paid as a Band 4 (£29,116 - £31,670) for the duration of the programme

· On successful completion of the programme you will be offered employment as a registered practitioner in a substantive post in NHS Lothian

· You will receive academic and practice learning support for the duration of your programme to facilitate your return to the NMC register

What happens next?

Applications are now invited from interested individuals who are seeking to re-join the NMC register for Adult or Mental Health nursing only.

Candidates will be required to apply to NHS Lothan and, following successful interview, to Glasgow Caledonian University.

On successful entry you will: -

  • Complete a six-month course (no fees).
  • Initially complete a seven-week theory block that has been created to both help prepare you for placement, and academic study.
  • The theory will be provided both online and will have some face-to-face skills sessions.
  • Clinical placement/employment will be arranged in a relevant area of your field of practice depending on vacancies within NHS Lothian. You will be paid as a band 4 employee for the duration of your course.
  • You will be fully supported by both Glasgow Caledonian University and NHS Lothian practice areas.
  • On successful completion of the course permanent employment in a Band 5 role within NHS Lothian is guaranteed.
