Consultant Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI Disease

NHS Lanarkshire - University Hospital Wishaw

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Surgeon with an interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery based at University Hospital Wishaw.

The successful applicant will join a busy Surgical Unit consisting of 6 Colorectal Surgeons, 5 Upper GI Consultants and 4 Breast Surgeons, participating in 1:11 on call rota.

Wishaw is the regional centre for specialist UGI surgical services including oesophago-gastric cancer resections, bariatric surgery and hiatal/biliary surgery. There is an emphasis on providing both laparoscopic and endoscopic intervention where possible in both malignant and benign disease and therefore skills in therapeutic UGI endoscopy and in particular endoscopic palliation of UGI cancer are essential. Whilst for the advertised post a background in resectional surgery is of interest, consideration would be given to candidates with a subspecialty interest in other aspects of UGI surgery as described above.

This busy District General Hospital was the first in NHS Lanarkshire to offer laparoscopic colorectal resection to all patients by all members of the team. Interests include a large Sacral Nerve stimulation practice, complex inflammatory Bowel Disease, laparoscopic ventral rectopexy and the endoscopic management of complex polyps with the biggest ESD practice in the West of Scotland. There is a weekly CRC MDT, complex polyp MDT as well as monthly Pelvic Floor MDT and a monthly IBD MDT. Wishaw is the centre for the pre–assessment service for the NHS Lanarkshire Bowel Screening Programme.

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis, subject to confirmation and approval of the final job plan. Applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. If full-time, up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional clinical activity.

The University of Glasgow enjoys close links with NHS Lanarkshire, and our medical students benefit greatly from the excellent educational opportunities provided by the board in both primary and secondary care. Those who are or who will be involved in teaching our students, or in any other activity which involves a contribution to teaching, research or scholarship within the University are eligible for honorary status at the University of Glasgow.

Honorary Status Role Holders are entitled to numerous benefits including a University of Glasgow ID card, use of the Library and other facilities, and a University IT account as required for their role. They have access to all courses run by the IT Services on the same basis as members of staff and are also permitted an educational discount when PC equipment is purchased through the IT Services.
