Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated candidates for the full time post of Healthcare Support Worker within the West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WoSSVC).


The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre (WOSSVC) is delivered from Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary The laboratories provide a full and comprehensive Virology service to the population of Greater Glasgow & Clyde, hospital based users e.g. medical, nursing, estates, pharmacy and other department staff e.g. , users in Primary Care and General Practice. The service also provides a Virology referral service to health boards in the West of Scotland and in some instances to health boards in NHS Scotland.


Duties include preparation of clinical specimens for analysis, including the safe disposal of clinical waste and the registering of patient related information onto the Laboratory Information System or other manual systems. The post holder will be responsible for working within Specimen Reception and dealing with telephone queries from staff from other departments and external agencies. The post holder will provide assistance to Biomedical Scientists for provision of the laboratory service and perform specific laboratory tests as required.


Applicants require 3 Highers at Grade C or above (one of which should include Chemistry or Biology together with Maths) or SVQ3 in relevant science subject or equivalent qualification, or completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences, or completion of equivalent accredited education / learning. Experience of working in a clinical laboratory is desirable.


This is a fixed term post, funded until 31st March 2025, based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The post holder will work 37 hours at the times necessary for the provision of the service. This will involve working days, evenings and weekends and Public Holidays which additional payments may apply.
