Job Advert

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is 1:5-6 partial shift roster. Usual hours are 09:00-17:00, with on call days continuing to 21:30. There may be a requirement for overnight supported call, pending previous experience. Weekend shifts (1:5) consist of Friday, Saturday and Sunday 09:00-21:30 with no requirement for overnight call, with a compensatory rest day on the following Monday. All streams of the rota are EWTD-compliant. Less than full time work patterns are supported by mutual agreement.

The post is available from 6th August 2025. It is based in the Paediatric Cardiology service for a fixed term of 12 months.

The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow is the largest paediatric teaching hospital in Scotland. In addition to providing care for children resident within Greater Glasgow the hospital is a tertiary referral centre for children from the West of Scotland and, in some sub-specialties, from the whole of Scotland. It is the only Level 3 paediatric cardiac centre in Scotland, at which all surgical, interventional and invasive electrophysiologic procedures are undertaken.

The successful applicant(s) will be supported by senior staff according to training grade, recognising this may be the first exposure to the specialty. Precise roles will be defined according to the level of previous experience. There will be involvement in the preoperative preparation of patients undergoing elective cardiac procedures as well as ward based postoperative management. There is also regular involvement in the assessment of infants referred into the neonatal unit with cardiac conditions. Attendance at outpatient is expected, as is participation in the weekly formal educational teaching program and journal clubs. Attendance at cath lab sessions, transoesophageal echocardiography, pacing, outreach practice and other areas of practice may be appropriate in accordance with the experience of the incumbent.

The paediatric cardiology service provides a weekly journal club as well as dedicated registrar teaching and echocardiography education sessions. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in and contribute to the weekly formal educational teaching programs. The posts provide an opportunity to benefit from the same teaching paediatric and paediatric cardiology trainees receive.
