We are seeking to appoint a Band 5 Endoscopy Pre-Assessment Staff Nurse, on a full time 37-hour contract to join the existing Endoscopy telephone pre-assessment team at NHS Grampian.

The Endoscopy pre-assessment team are based within Ashgrove House on the grounds of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). It provides a telephone pre-assessment service to patients in the North East of Scotland who are referred with gastro-intestinal symptoms or have tested positive on the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and require investigation. The department is open Monday to Friday 0800-1800.

The role involves providing psychological and informational support to individuals who require gastro-intestinal investigations. The successful candidate will assess, prepare and support patients for their investigation most of whom have been referred on the urgent suspected cancer pathway and are facing a possible cancer diagnosis. It is essential that the post holder has the ability, knowledge and confidence to take an in-depth medical history, request further investigations such as CT scans and bloods when required.

As a member of the Endoscopy Pre-assessment and Bowel Screening Team, the post holder will be involved with the vetting referrals of patients from the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, answering voicemail messages and emails from patients/colleagues.

The successful candidate will act as a local resource for members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), answering queries and assisting with problem solving as the need arises.

The Department is supported by Speciality Clinicians, Clinical Endoscopists, and Service Managers. The successful candidate will be expected to work within this busy, well established department and integrate with the team. Therefore, good communication and networking are an essential skillset.

The Foresterhill campus is reputed to be the largest in Europe with the principal medical services for Grampian. The University of Aberdeen Medical School is closely integrated. On site are internationally renowned facilities, such as the Institute for Medical Sciences, the Health Economic Research Unit and the shortly to be opened Rowett Institute of Nutrition. There are currently two large building projects taking place on the Foresterhill Site. The Baird Family Hospital and the National Treatment Centre, which will provide patient centre care in new and modern settings.

Aberdeen is a cosmopolitan city and the oil capital of Europe. It has comprehensive transport links with the rest of the UK and Europe, a range of excellent schools and high-quality housing. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, ideal for those interested in outdoor pursuits. The quality of life offered in Aberdeen has much to a health professional living in the area.

The city benefits from having 2 universities, the ancient and historic Aberdeen University as well as the modern and well regarded Robert Gordon’s University.NHS Grampian works closely with these universities, encouraging and supporting staff wishing to further their educational portfolio or develop new skills.

Applicants must be a registered nurse and have acute nursing experience in either or both medical and surgical disciplines. They must be a NMC (UK) registered nurse and have a commitment to ongoing professional development. Desirable attributes include experience in GI nursing/endoscopy though not essential.
