Applications are welcome for the above six months fixed term full-time (40 hours per week) post based in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, from 01 March 2026.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • This is a six month fellowship providing training in GI and liver transplantation.
  • Day to day care of patients in wards
  • Liver transplant clinics
  • Assessing patients for liver transplant
  • Presenting the assessment patients at the weekly departmental transplant assessment meeting
  • Emergency endoscopies as required.
  • Participation in academic, clinical and audit meetings

Key requirements:

  • Completed IMT or equivalent
  • MRCP at least part 1 and part 2-but ideally PACES
  • At least six minths of GI experience ideally in a UK liver unit or equivalent
  • Has worked in the NHS during the last 12 months
  • GMC registered medical practitioner.
  • Licence to practice
  • Available to take up post 01/March/2026

Further information:

The Scottish Liver Transplant Unit (SLTU) performs approximately 100 liver transplants per year. Admitting around 50 patients per year with acute liver failure from all over Scotland. Annually up to 200 patients attend for liver transplant assessment. It is the only liver transplant unit in Scotland.

There is a 20 bedded transplant ward (which also incorporates renal pancreatic transplant and islet transplantation) as well as a purpose built transplant and renal high dependency unit.

The GI/Liver ward has 30 beds with 15-20 liver patients and 5-15 GI beds. There are two individual teams each week serving the liver and luminal GI patients separately. Each team has a consultant of the week, a registrar, a core medical trainee and a foundation doctor.

The post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training.
