The Role

As part of a multidisciplinary team, a Healthcare Assistant will carry out routine personal care/assist with routine examination duties for patients, in support of (and supervised by), a registered nurse/clinician. You will ensure a person centred approach to care delivery which is safe and effective to ensure and maintain quality strategy and will carry out assigned duties to maintain hygiene, order and safety within the ward/department environment.

Please Note: Duties may vary with the type of ward/department and the degree of patient dependency.

The working pattern for this role includes Days and Nights

In this key role, you will:

  • Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating patients to maximise patient care.
  • Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients’ carers and relatives and refer them to a registered nurse for any questions they may have on the patients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise.
  • Report observed changes in the patients’ physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to ensure effective communication.
  • Work within Divisional policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues

What You'll Bring:

  • Knowledge of personal care and related procedures or previous volunteer or work experience in a health, education or social environment.
  • Required to undertake on the job training and induction
  • Undertake mandatory HCSW standards
  • Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
  • Working knowledge of basic information technology

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
