The role:
The Acute Oncology Service at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a nurse-led service run by experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The service provides specialised oncology care and advice to patients who present acutely unwell as a result of an oncological emergency or as a side effect of their cancer/cancer treatment. This can often be the initial presentation of cancer and patients require highly specialist care and psychological support. The service is part of the wider Beatson Acute Oncology Service and although this post is based at QEUH, there may be a requirement on occasion to work
within the Acute Oncology Assessment Unit at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
The role of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) within the Acute Oncology Service is that of a highly experienced clinical nurse responsible for providing direct advanced clinical care to patients with an oncological malignancy. The post holder will independently utilise a broad range of advanced knowledge, skills and theory in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and initial management of the medical and nursing needs of this specialist group of patients. The ANP will have skills in the early detection and intervention of clinical deterioration in existing or new medical conditions, and will be able to demonstrate high levels of communication skills to liaise effectively with the wider MDT. The post holder will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and make critical judgements to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role while working within the guidelines of agreed clinical protocols.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
- Permanent contract
- Full-time position (37 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for the post are Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm.
Key responsibilities:
- Work within the Board’s Policies and Procedures and the parameters set down in agreed local/regional clinical protocols and guidelines and national guidelines.
- Organise the clinical management of individual patients, utilising clinical knowledge and advanced skills to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and initiate changes where required. This will include monitoring and evaluating the response to treatment through analysis and interpretation of clinical tests and investigations (eg blood and radiological) and the discharge of the patient.
- Respond to emergency situations utilising clinical judgement and decision making to initiate appropriate interventions and treatment for patients.
- Assess and manage the patient with oncological emergencies and other acute complications of disease or side-effects/toxicities of treatment.
- Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes of patient centred care involving the patient and their carers wherever possible.
- Utilise the role of the ANP to improve and maintain continuity for patients and their families.
- Make and receive referrals to and from the collaborative care team.
- Communicate patients’ conditions, verbally and in writing, to other members of the healthcare team and contribute to decision-making processes in patient management.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
First Level Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years’ experience at senior level with at least 3 years within an acute speciality / oncology
Master’s Degree in Nursing or working towards this or if trainee the expectation to complete
As appropriate to area of clinical practice successfully complete the agreed Masters level training pathway to develop Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner role:
- Clinical assessment
- Clinical reasoning, judgement & diagnostic decision making
- Anatomy & pathophysiology
- Non- medical prescribing V300
- Leading, delivering & evaluating care
- Practice learning/transferable work based learning processes.
High level of critical thinking, problem solving and attention to detail
Highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience gained through extensive post registration experience in the cancer setting
Excellent collaborative, influencing and networking skills
Excellent organisation and interpersonal skills
IT Skills
Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description.
