The role:
You will work as part of a team supporting a stable ventilator dependent child independently within the home and wider community. You will be trained within the Royal Hospital for Children to gain the skills to safely and confidently deliver care to the child. Training will be delivered by registered nurses and will take the form of a competency based training programme. In the hospital environment, you will be allocated work by a Registered Nurse. You will work supervised and work within an individual defined care plan for the child when providing patient care. Trained nurses will be available for advice and guidance in the hospital setting. In the community you will work independently to assist the parent(s) to care for their stable ventilated child. This will include a range of duties that will form part of a care plan that has been previously agreed with parents and qualified nursing staff.
The post holder will be required to work within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC) Board area and that of neighbouring Health boards

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Royal Hospital for Children
- Part-time positions
- Permanent contract
- The shift pattern for this post are flexible to meet the needs of the service involving both day and night shifts over 7 days.
Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Key responsibilities:
The care plan in both settings is individualized to each child and may include:
- Eating
- Basic hygiene needs
- Social/recreational needs
- Nutritional needs – including gastrostomy/ naso gastric tube feeding
- Elimination needs – including intermittent catheterisation and bowel stoma care.
- Communication needs
- Moving, handling, positioning, seating, transferring needs
The post holder will also be required to participate in other duties that may not be direct patient care duties. These will include:
- Daily safety checks of equipment
- Cleaning of equipment
- Keeping an accurate record of care delivered
- Reporting any incidents or accidents to the team leader and complete a datix form
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential
- Basic literacy and numeracy
- Previous child care – formal or lived experience
Willingness and aptitude to undertake training in caring for a technology dependent child and be competent in the following skills within a 3 month period:
- Tracheostomy skills
- Ventilation skills
- Suctioning skills
- Resuscitation skills
- Nasogastric feeding
- Gastrostomy feeding
- Moving and handling
Desirable
- SVQ Level 3 or equivalent in healthcare or childcare discipline or SCQF level equivalent in healthcare or childcare discipline
- Delivery of care to children with complex care needs - formal or lived experience
- Formal Health care

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
