The role:
The Orthopaedic Outpatient Department is located within the QEUH. The purpose of the department is to provide ongoing nursing care and support for patients within the Orthopaedic outpatient environment including the plaster room.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
Permanent, Full time
Base location - New Victoria Hospital Ortho OPD
Shift Pattern - Monday - Friday, 0830-1630
Key responsibilities:
Clinical and Specialist Knowledge
Provide clinical leadership, drive innovation and set measurable standards of care.
Develop and maintain expert practice across all relevant clinical areas.
Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care to ensure high clinical standards.
Maintain and expand professional competencies to meet patient needs.
Support the Senior Charge Nurse in leading clinical or managerial change.
In their absence, supervise, deploy and develop staff to maintain safe, effective service delivery.
Coordinate seamless patient care from admission to discharge through effective communication with MDT, primary care and carers.
Ensure all documentation is accurate, timely and compliant with NMC standards.
Maintain strong communication with patients, relatives and all disciplines to ensure needs are met.
Adhere to infection control policies and model safe practice.
Work within NMC code and professional guidelines.
Education and Research/Audit
Participate in audit activity and support the development of evidence‑based practice.
Lead, supervise and mentor junior staff and students, ensuring their learning needs are met.
Continuously develop the role through evidence‑based practice and ongoing professional learning.
Organisational/Managerial
Provide senior cover and manage the department in the Senior Charge Nurse’s absence.
Support HR processes including conduct management, rostering, leave allocation, mandatory training and sickness reporting, ensuring appropriate use of Bank staff.
Assist with recruitment and selection of staff.
Support regular 1:1 meetings and ensure completion of KSF/PDP reviews for nursing staff.
Manage departmental resources effectively, including supplies and medicines.
Adhere to hospital, organisational and national policies.
Report accidents, incidents and complaints, initiating documentation or enquiries as required.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential
- Registered Nurses on the NMC Register with relevant experience at band 5 within an Orthopaedic setting
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Good IT knowledge and skills
- Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of a range clinical procedures and practices
- Knowledge of hospital policies/procedures and practices specific to the working environment
- Effective time management skills
- Ability to use initiative
Desirable
- Working towards a Nursing degree
- Management qualification
- Working towards or have obtained a Casting Certificate
- Knowledge of Virtual Fracture Clinics

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
