The role:

This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 3 Occupational Therapy Technician. We are looking for a motivated, hard-working individual to join our Older People’s Community Mental Health Team, supporting the occupational therapy provision by providing prescribed treatment and interventions to older people with mental health conditions within the South of Glasgow City.

The Older People’s Community Mental Health Team responds to a wide range of referrals for individuals with organic or functional mental health conditions, including dementia, mood disorders, anxiety and other severe and enduring mental health conditions. As an Occupational Therapy Technician, you will assist the Occupational Therapy team providing support to the Occupational Therapists within the team. You will work with patients on an individual or group work basis to enable and rehabilitate their level of function in their daily living activities to maximise their independence within their living and community environment.

The Occupational Therapy Technician will report to the Band 5 and Band 6 Occupational Therapists and will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and engage in team activities as directed by the senior occupational therapist.

Applicants with experience in working with older adults and/or with mental health conditions is preferable. and you should be able to demonstrate a desire to work in a community setting. You will visit patients within their homes, therefore a full driving licence is anticipated.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Elderpark Clinic
  • Permanent Contract
  • Part-time position (22.2 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm
  • Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Key responsibilities:

  • To work effectively as part of a team in providing a programme for the department or community based therapeutic activities

  • To use technical/creative skills to engage clients in therapeutic activities to promote independence and well being

  • Under the supervision of a registered OT, facilitate and participate in planned group work and individual activities, ongoing continuous assessment and adjustment of own clinical interventions based on the fluctuating needs of the client group

  • Contribute to formal OT assessments, under guidance of a registered OT and provide feedback on clients’ functioning

  • To undertake relevant activities both internal and external to meet training objectives as identified with supervisor

  • To maintain a record of learning and development

  • To ensure that up to date written and electronic records (i.e. PIMS) and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and Mental Health Service standards

  • In line with Mental Health Services guidelines, review and reflect on personal practice and performance through effective supervision and appraisal

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Experience of working in a caring environment
  • Willingness to undertake the following within 12 months of appointment:-

- Computing skills

- Group skills

- Food handling

  • Technical qualification, e.g. City & Guilds or Health & Social Care NVQ Level 1
  • Current UK driving licence
  • At least 2 years working in paid or voluntary employment or community work
  • Health/social care/teaching experience
  • Experience as a carer
  • Ability to work single handed with individuals/groups within a supportive environment
  • Observation skills
  • Competency in one or more leisure/creative technical activities
  • Ability to teach practical skills
  • Good personal organisation skills
