The role:
To work within the nursing and multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of care to haemodialysis patients and their carers. Competently perform the necessary technical/invasive/physical aspects of care for this defined patient group.
Carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.
To support the SCN to ensure delivery of high standards of safe and effective nursing care with a robust framework of clinical, financial and staff governance.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
Permanent, Full time
Base location - Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Shift Pattern - Monday – Saturday long days. Twilight shift Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Key responsibilities:
Clinical
- Provide clinical leadership for the assessment of patient needs, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, which are evidence based. Utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
- Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping.
Professional:
- Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well being are met.
- Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.
- Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practising in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
- Promote and support innovation in clinical practice.
Education and Research/Audit:
- Ensure the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES Quality Placement Standards.
- Ensure completion of clinical appraisals for pre and post registration nurses.
- Demonstrate own professional development.
- Identify research/clinical audit priorities in conjunction with relevant professional groups.
- Lead the development of the research/clinical audit plan for the ward/department.
- Undertake audit in keeping with agreed clinical quality indicators.
- Provide guidance, supervision and support for staff undertaking research, audit or teaching activities.
Organisational/Managerial:
- Organise own time and that of staff within remit.
- Accountable for the effective management of resources including stores supplies pharmacy and maintenance of equipment.
- Promote the development of a flexible and skilled nursing workforce.Responsible for the efficient and effective management of the nursing resource including roster management and additional hours.
- Responsible for the recruitment and selection process within remit.
- With the SCN share personal objectives with staff and lead in the appraisal and setting of personal development plans of staff.
- Contribute to the wider Corporate agenda.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- First Level Registered Nurse
- Minimum of 4 years post registration experience
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience within renal nursing field.
- Competent in haemodialysis treatment
- Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
