The role:
The Directorate of Forensic Mental Health provides inpatient care in both medium and low secure settings. The service provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for patients with a focus on risk assessment and reduction, rehabilitation and discharge planning for the return to the community.
The post holder will have clinical leadership and line management responsibility for a staff team and be accountable for the co-ordination and provision of specialist nursing care and treatment for individuals who have a mental disorder or learning disability who have demonstrated serious offending behaviour or present significant risk to themselves or others. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the organisations objectives, promote team working and ensure safe and effective clinical practice within their area or responsibility.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Rowanbank Clinic
- Permanent Contract
- Full-time position (37 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for this post are predominately clinical hours Monday to Friday, some weekend work required for senior cover
Key responsibilities:
- Functioning as nurse leader within a multi-disciplinary team, to a defined patient group undertaking aspects of care coordination where required.
- Undertaking the nursing process regarding assessment of complex care needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
- Carrying out risk assessment, contributing to risk management planning in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team in compliance with NHSGGC policy and procedures
- Carrying out all relevant forms of nursing care pertinent to the individual needs of people within the defined patient group and local P&P in relation to the secure environment.
- Identifying, coordinating and responding to the health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving the mental well-being of patients
- Identifying, coordinating and responding to the health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving the physical health of patients
- Carrying out, reviewing and monitoring all relevant forms of nursing care pertinent to the needs of the individual responding to the needs of patients which might be related to vulnerability, gender health, domestic abuse, child protection and/or self-harm
- Ensuring therapeutic staff/ patient relationships (and carers) including those with complex/ unstable care needs are met within a participative framework demonstrating principles of equality, dignity and respect accounting for spiritual and cultural diversity. Working proactively with other agencies/ services (i.e. interpreter services) to aid effective communication
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse – Level 1 NMC registration
- Educated to a minimum degree level, RNLD/ or equivalent experience
- Completion of an evidence based psychological therapies/ psychological approaches to care programme
- Specialist knowledge and application of mental health nursing care including physical healthcare of people with complex/unstable care needs
- Specialist knowledge and application of risk assessment/ risk management factors impacting on mental health, illness, wellness and recovery for people with complex and unstable care needs
- Evidence of active and ongoing CPD
- Evidence of Nurse Line Management Supervision / Clinical Supervision and supervision of staff
- Specialist knowledge of rights, values based practice and legislation frameworks
Desirable:
- Completion of frontline leadership/management programme
- Actively working towards postgraduate level or equivalent experience
- Post Registration Career Development Framework, evidence of pillars of practice at Level 7 Senior Practitioner (equivalent):
- Clinical Practice – safe effective person centred care
- Facilitation of learning
- Leadership – applied
- Research and development
- Experience of working in an inpatient environment

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
