NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde invites applications for a whole‑time Consultant Neonatologist to join the neonatal team at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Paisley, part of Scotland’s largest health board. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of a high‑quality Local Neonatal Unit within a supportive and progressive multidisciplinary team.

The Role

The successful applicant will be based primarily in the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, providing consultant‑led care for infants requiring intensive, high‑dependency, and special care. The post also includes delivery of neonatal outpatient clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Glasgow.

This post is suitable for applicants who have completed, or are close to completing, Neonatal SPIN training or who can demonstrate equivalent experience and competence in neonatal medicine.

Detailed Job planning will be undertaken and agreed with the successful candidate prior to commencement, supporting individual clinical and professional development needs.

The Neonatal Service

The RAH Neonatal Unit is the smallest of the three neonatal units within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, delivering high‑quality Level 2 (Local Neonatal Unit) services.

The unit includes:

  • 3 Intensive Care cots
  • 3 High Dependency cots
  • 10 Special Care cots

Short‑term intensive care is provided locally; infants born at <28 weeks’ gestation or those likely to require prolonged intensive care are transferred to one of the regional NICUs for the duration of their intensive care.

The service is well supported by a multidisciplinary clinical team including:

  • FY2 doctors
  • Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) at Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Resident doctors and clinical fellows
  • Consultant colleagues delivering weekday and on-call cover

Key Responsibilities

As a consultant member of the neonatal team, the post holder will:

Clinical Care

  • Provide consultant leadership for inpatient neonatal care within the RAH Neonatal Unit.
  • Deliver outpatient neonatal follow‑up clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children.
  • Participate in the consultant on‑call rota supporting safe, sustainable 24/7 care.
  • Coordinate the safe transfer of infants when escalation to regional Level 3 care is required.

Education, Training and Support

  • Deliver high‑quality training and supervision for junior medical staff, ANNPs, nurses, and AHP colleagues.
  • Help maintain a positive learning environment focused on competence, confidence, and continuity.

Quality Improvement & Governance

  • Lead and participate in quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance activities.
  • Contribute to service development aligned with local and national neonatal strategies.

Research & Innovation

  • Support neonatal research activity within the unit and wider NHSGGC Neonatal Services.
  • Encourage engagement with evidence‑based practice and translational improvement.

Teamworking & Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe, sustainable, and compassionate service.
  • Contribute to local leadership discussions, pathway optimisation, and strategic development of neonatal care.

There is no current or future expectation for the post holder to work in the neonatal unit at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC).

Person Requirements

Applicants must be eligible for full GMC registration and hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a CCT in Paediatrics with sub‑specialty interest in Neonatology, including SPIN or equivalent training.
