The role:

Intensive CAMHS & Unscheduled CAMHS provides comprehensive accessible services to health care professionals and their patients throughout Glasgow’s Emergency Departments, General Hospitals, MHAU, Mental Health In-patient Services and CAMHS Services. The service will provide patients with high quality clinical care delivered through comprehensive psychosocial assessment and evidence based interventions and risk assessment.

The service provides emergency, secondary and unscheduled mental health care services to clients aged up to 17yrs inclusive, experiencing mental health crisis or requiring additional intensive supports.

Providing a comprehensive approach to care, rapidly responding to people in acute mental health distress, until the crisis has been resolved or no longer requires additional intensive supports and the patient is linked to on-going care. This will be delivered on the basis of least restrictive alternative and minimum disruption to the lives of the patients, and offer a credible alternative to hospital, whenever possible. This will take due note of the supports available and the needs of carers involved in the informal care of the patient.

Throughout the short term input, the service will provide intensive supports and interventions to patients and carers prior to and following discharge from hospital where appropriate, and will include patients who are on temporary leave from hospital through, for example, suspension of detention. This will include patients from out with NHSGG&C catchment area who may be temporarily cared for within service user facilities within the NHSGG&C boundary.

Key responsibilities:

Core Responsibilities

  • Care coordination and named practitioner duties for patients with complex mental health needs, working within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Holistic assessment and care planning, including risk assessment, implementation, and evaluation of specialist interventions.

  • Delivering nursing care in the least restrictive and most therapeutic manner.

  • Promoting mental and physical health, identifying health‑promotion needs, and supporting relapse prevention.

  • Responding to vulnerability and safeguarding concerns, including issues related to gender, domestic abuse, adult/child protection, and self‑harm.

  • Building therapeutic relationships with patients and carers, ensuring dignity, equality, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication (including use of interpreters).

  • Using evidence‑based psychological approaches with individuals and groups.

  • Administering and monitoring medication, including managing side effects.

  • Working in partnership with patients and carers using values‑based, person‑centred practice.

  • Ensuring compliance with professional standards and legislation, including NMC Code and relevant Scottish mental health and protection acts.

Governance, Leadership & Professional Development

  • Contributing to clinical governance, including communication, leadership, audit, evidence‑based practice, learning culture, and safety.

  • Participating in and providing supervision, including caseload, line management, and clinical/reflective supervision.

  • Monitoring and supporting the practice of junior staff and healthcare support workers, promoting professional development.

  • Supporting student learning, including mentorship and maintaining a high‑quality practice learning environment.

  • Identifying and addressing development needs for self and team members.

  • Maintaining high standards of record‑keeping to ensure safe, effective, person‑centred care.

  • Liaising with statutory and non‑statutory agencies, especially across health and social care interfaces.

  • Providing leadership and management cover in the absence of the Nurse Team Leader.


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse or RNLD (Level 1 NMC registration).

  • Educated to minimum degree level or equivalent.

  • Completion of an evidence‑based psychological therapies/psychological approaches to care programme.

  • Specialist knowledge and application of mental health nursing care, including physical healthcare.

  • Specialist knowledge and application of risk assessment and factors affecting mental health, mental illness, wellness, and recovery.

  • Evidence of active and ongoing CPD.

  • Evidence of providing Clinical Supervision/reflective practice as a supervisor.

  • Specialist knowledge of rights, values‑based practice, and relevant legislative frameworks.

  • Evidence of using digital technology, information systems, email, and basic applications.

  • Experience of working in a community environment.

  • Demonstrated application of a range of specialist skills and behaviours, including organisation, leadership, self‑direction, communication, negotiation, influencing, persuasion, facilitation, conflict resolution, and decision‑making.

  • Ability to work flexibly, prioritise workload, delegate appropriately, and adapt to deliver person‑centred care without direct supervision.

  • Ability to form therapeutic professional relationships and work effectively within a wider team.

  • Working knowledge and demonstrable evidence of the NMC Code.

  • Ability to undertake multiple clinical contacts in home or near‑home environments, including driving when required.

Desirable

  • Actively working towards postgraduate‑level study or equivalent.

  • Completed a recognised mentorship preparation programme/registered mentor.

  • Evidence within the CMHN Career Development Framework of Level 6 Senior Practitioner pillars of practice:

    • Clinical practice – safe, effective, person‑centred care.

    • Facilitation of learning.

    • Applied leadership.

    • Research and development.

  • Experience of care coordination.

  • Experience of line‑management responsibilities.
