The role:
The housekeeper will work in a distinct role to support the delivery of clinical care by assisting in the maintenance of clean, safe, attractive environment, conductive to patient care. Co-ordinating a range of services including cleaning, supplies, stores, linen services and general maintenance issues, reporting and rectification. The post holder will work closely with the divisions support service departments and Senior Charge Nurses and staff to ensure that national and local standards are met.
The housekeeper will communicate with patients, parents and visitors providing essential information relating to the general facilities and ad hoc services available within the ward and hospital environment.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Princess Royal Maternity Hospital
- Permanent Contract
- Full-time position (37 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for this post are Monday to Friday
Key responsibilities:
The post holder will work to ensure the delivery of efficient high quality standards from the range of support services to meet the needs and demands of the unit. The house keeper is expected to have a flexible approach to the daily routine and an understanding and ability to prioritise circumstances/situations arising throughout the day.
- The post holder will undertake the monitoring of cleanliness and influence the quality of cleaning standards in the department. Ensuring predetermined standards are complied with consistently. This will include daily cleaning lists completion and standard operating procedure for cleaning of near patient equipment. The post holder is expected to liaise with domestic services to arrange ad hoc cleaning tasks such as spot cleaning, secondary cleans, terminal/deep cleans and to ensure that these are dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
- The post holder will ensure general and specialised equipment, as advised by the Senior Charge Nurse, are cleaned as per policy.
- The post holder will facilitate a safe, clean and tidy environment, free from all unnecessary clutter.
- The post holder will maintain the dry store area and an appropriate stock level of patient supplies.
- The post holder will monitor the kitchen area and staff rest room to ensure the environment is kept clean and tidy at all times and will check that refrigerated foods are labelled and stored as per policy and all out of date foods are discarded.
- The house keeper will ensure that ward microwave and staff fridges are temperature recorded and clean.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Familiarity with hospital/ward environments.
- Experience or ability to identify areas where service delivery at ward level could be improved, assess the impact of reorganising service activity and navigate agreed change to a successful conclusion.
- Demonstrate an ability to develop and maintain effective and efficient administrative monitoring and recording systems and have an understanding of basic computer systems.
- Awareness and understanding of hospital acquired infection principles and its prevention and the role of the healthcare environment inspectorate.
- Awareness and understanding of food hygiene principles including food hygiene in ward kitchens policy.
- Knowledge and understanding of hospital and departmental policies that affect day to day activities e.g. Health and Safety, lifting and handling, infection control, environmental cleanliness standard, monitoring tools, safety of medical gases, COSHH Regulations, fire safety and evacuation training.
- The post holder will complete the cleanliness champion programme and will ensure that all statutory and mandatory learn pro training is up to date as part of annual EKSF and PDP process.
- Awareness of the policy on confidentiality and Data Protection Act 1998 relating to information held manually or on computerised systems.
- The post holder is required to respect the confidentiality and privacy of patients and staff at all times.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
