The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Emergency Department in RHC as a band 6 senior staff nurse. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential to this role. The department is a fast paced busy department delivering care to a diverse group of patients and their families. The role will include working within a team in several areas within the department including Triage, Minors Majors and Resuscitation. Medication administrations including oral and intra venous will be a large part of the job as well as looking after medical, surgical, orthopaedic and several other speciality patients with an extensive range of illnesses. Undertaking the nurse in charge role to oversee and support a team of staff looking after a group of patients with varying degrees of dependency.

The role also includes coordinating the department in the absence of the band 7 attending huddles and touchpoints with the senior management team. Managerial tasks will also be an integral part of this role to assist the wider senior nursing team. Teaching will be provided to allow completion of all learning needs and contracts essential to this role.

Key responsibilities:

  • To supervise and manage nursing staff within the clinical area to ensure that patient needs are assessed, care planned, implemented and evaluated, and that there is consultation and involvement of patient/carers.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards and ensuring high quality record keeping within area of responsibility.
  • Develops specialised programmes of care/care packages and provides highly specialised advice concerning the treatment of complex patients groups.
  • To provide an expert knowledge base, understanding and clinical competence ensuring others maintain a high standard of patient care.
  • To effectively and efficiently manage the use of the nursing resource to ensure that appropriate skill mix is maintained at all times.
  • Provide support and teaching for junior colleagues. Providing appropriate supervision.
  • Awareness of budgetary control and monitoring of the ward budget which ensures provision of a high quality and cost effective service.
  • Workload is determined by the needs of the service. The post holder will be responsible to the senior charge nurse for clinical guidance and professional management, work review and formal appraisal of performance.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential:

  • Part 8 or 15 NMC Register RN or RSCN Educated to degree level or working towards it
  • Appropriate post registration experience at Band 5 in an acute setting
  • Good Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good report writing skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Motivated to learn and develop practice within paediatric

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of how to use computer office packages

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
