The role:
This post will be based within the Occupational Therapy Department at Gartnavel Royal Hospital working within the adult acute admission wards.
The post holder requires to be motivated, reliable, have excellent communication skills and knowledge of the role of occupational therapy within mental health. Previous experience in the care sector and an interest in mental health recovery are essential. The service provides regular supervision and opportunities for professional development.
The post holder will be part of a well established and supportive occupational therapy team.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
Permanent, Full time
Shift Pattern - Monday – Friday. 8.30am – 4.30pm
Base location - Gartnavel Royal Hospital
Key responsibilities:
The main responsibilities include engaging patients within activity focussed interventions and treatment sessions aimed to develop independent living skills, following assessment by an Occupational Therapist.
The post holder will also have responsibility to assist with tasks involved in the day to day running of the occupational therapy department.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Experience of working in a caring environment
- Willingness to undertake the following within 12 months of appointment:-
- Computing skills
- Group skills
- Food handling
- Technical qualification, e.g. City & Guilds or Health & Social Care NVQ Level 1
- Current driving licence
- Experience working in paid or voluntary employment or community work
- Health/social care/teaching experience
- Experience as a carer
- Ability to work single handed with individuals/groups within a supportive environment
- Observation skills
- Competency in one or more leisure/creative technical activities
- Ability to teach practical skills
- Good personal organisation skills
- Awareness of the function of basic aids and adaptations within GGNHS and other local authority systems
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- Basic numeracy and literacy
- Positive interpersonal skills
- Understanding of professional conduct
- Health/safety and risk awareness
- Demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning
- Willingness to work flexibly
- Self awareness

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
