The role:
The Facilities Directorate deliver a variety of services (e.g. patient and retail catering, domestic cleaning, pottering, transport)which support and contribute to the provision of quality patient care.
This Catering Post supports with the delivery of catering services to patients, and for functions within the hospital, regeneration of patients meals either centrally or at ward level, plating patient meals at the point of service as advised by nursing staff and cleaning and wash-up of all equipment, machinery, and crockery associated with catering services. You will assist food production staff with the basic preparation of meals, undertake picking & packing of patient meal component and support the overall delivery of patient meals to ward level. You should comply with Food Hygiene Regulations with regard to food service.
No qualifications or experience are required for this post as all training will be given on the job but you should be able to work under pressure and have good communication skills. The aim of this role is to provide a quality catering service to the hospital premises, ensuring that patients, staff and visitors are provided with food and beverage service in adherence with Food Safety Regulations. Please note there are no full-time posts available.
No Band 2 roles are eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa or Heath and Care Worker visa. routes. For Band 3 roles, only posts of 32 hours per week or more may meet eligibility. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) cannot provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for roles that do not meet these criteria, and applications requiring sponsorship will not be considered.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Royal Alexandra Hospital
- Permanent Contract
- Part-time position (14.9 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for this post are original shift Mon- Fri 16.00-19.00 New shift Monday- Friday 11.30-14.30
- Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Key responsibilities:
- Supporting the delivery of catering services to patients, and for functions within the hospital.
- Regeneration of patients meals either centrally or at ward level

- Cleaning and wash-up of all equipment, machinery, and crockery associated with catering services.
- Assist food production staff with the basic preparation of meals.
- Undertake picking & packing of patient meal components.
- Support the overall delivery of patient meals to ward level.
- Comply with Food Hygiene Regulations with regard to food service.
- Comply with HACCP system in relation to equipment cleaning and departmental cleanliness.
- Maintain high personal hygiene standards.
- Comply with Health and Safety regulations and adhere to manual handling/risk assessment/fire safety training.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Knowledge

Training
- Initial Departmental Training.
- Completion of Departmental Lesson Plans held within the Training Manual
- Ongoing training to meet changes in Health and Safety, Food Safety, Moving and Handling and
- Infection Control Protocols
- Basic Food Hygiene
- COSHH
- Knowledge of departmental quality systems.
- Ability to perform all tasks and duties throughout the department. Staff will be trained to facilitate cross service working commensurate with job descriptions for Facilities Assistant (Porter & Catering – Patient/Retail) if required at site level.
Experience
- Working knowledge of Health and Safety and Infection Control.
- Food Safety Certificate ( not essential as training will be given)
- Working within a large organisation

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
