An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive and enthusiastic GP(s) to work with our innovative and evolving NHS Western Isles’ Walk-in-Service. This pilot service, developed in response to a request from the Scottish Government, sets out a rural‑proofed model designed to relieve pressure on local GP practices across the Western Isles, improve patient access, and enhance the resilience of primary and urgent care services.
The service will initially provide same-day urgent care for temporary residents and visitors across the Western Isles, freeing capacity in the current GP services for Western Isles residents. This pioneering service will be located in Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh, (OUaB), Benbecula with ready access to onsite diagnostic facilities. The walk-in-service team will include a Primary Care Flow Coordinator, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, GP, and a Pharmacy Technician support.
The service will be available weekdays from 9am-5.30pm, offering telephone, Near Me (video conferencing) and face-to-face appointments at the Walk-in-Service Clinical Hub. For temporary residents not located in the Uist area, virtual appointments (telephone or Near Me) will be available and face-to -face appointments will be arranged (if necessary) in an appropriate location. From November 2026, the service will expand to be available as a walk-in provision for residents of North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist, as an alternative to attending their own GP Practice.
You will be working independently within your sphere of competency as a clinician in a multi-skilled team.
You will have close working relationships with the NHS Western Isles’ Urgent and Unscheduled Community Care (U&UsC) team who provide home-visiting services. You will also have collaborative working relationships with all nine GP practices across NHS-Western Isles.
Candidates should be fully registered in the GMC register for General Practice with a licence to practice and have been awarded a CCT in General Practice or have completed equivalent vocational training in General Practice. Candidates should have recent experience of working in a comparable Primary Care Services.
A full UK driving licence is necessary.
