Sports Medicine
As a Clinical Development Fellow in Sports Medicine, you will spend 80% of your time working in the Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH), with the remaining 20% dedicated to gaining valuable experience in Sport and Exercise Medicine. This experience will be acquired through a combination of activities including time at the Hampden sports clinic, pitch-side exposure with the Scottish Football Association and Glasgow Warriors, attendance at the distinguished Sport Promote Course, and involvement in quality improvement initiatives.
You will be guided by Dr Jonny Gordon and Dr Kevin Thomson, both of whom are Emergency Medicine consultants at QEUH and serve with the Scotland Men's A football squad. Additional opportunities are anticipated, such as spending time with the medical teams at Queens Park FC and the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, further broadening your exposure to sports medicine in practice.
Teaching & Education
Our Teaching Clinical Development Fellows are an integral part of the ED Education team. Each CDF will play a pivotal role in supporting and supervising medical students, nurturing mentoring skills while helping to shape a vibrant and engaging undergraduate teaching programme. This includes delivering small group sessions, hands‑on skills teaching and immersive simulation experiences.
Beyond undergraduate education, there are a variety of opportunities to contribute to — and lead on — a wide range of departmental teaching initiatives, including:
• Our evolving handover teaching series
• Simulation design and delivery
• HOT Skills (Hands‑On Team‑Based training)
• Development and organisation of the twice‑weekly lunchtime teaching programme
• Education-focused research projects
• Creative contributions to the departmental newsletter
You will also have access to GG&C simulation faculty workshops and a variety of education‑related CPD courses, supporting you to grow as an educator and innovate within our teaching community.
Research & Innovation
You will join the QEUH Emergency Department Research & Innovation (R&I) team, which includes Consultants in Emergency Medicine, Clinical Development Fellows, and a group of experienced research nurses, supported by QEUH R&I and the Glasgow Clinical Research Facility.
As a member of the team, you will contribute to the screening and recruitment of patients into an expanding portfolio of research studies, while also supporting the development of new projects. Established collaborations with specialties including respiratory medicine, cardiology, stroke, geriatrics, and infectious diseases provide opportunities for both study delivery and protocol development.
At the start of the post, the focus will be on your integration into the team, with exposure to our current clinical trials, R&I processes, and completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training. As you progress, you will take ownership of a dedicated research project within one of our themed areas. Previous R&I Clinical Development Fellows have consistently achieved presentations and publications at local and national levels, and similar outcomes are expected to support future career progression.
Major Trauma
You will spend the first 6 months of this post within the Emergency Department refining your emergency skills then rotate in February 2027 to our Major Trauma service where you will work within a multi-disciplinary team delivering high level care to admitted patients.
Non-clinical time will be spent doing focused improvement work to augment systems and processes which not only affect the trauma patients coming through the ED but the other critically ill patients we receive through the resus room as the busiest department in Scotland.
The Major Trauma fellow will also have a place reserved on the QEUH ATLS course.
Quality Improvement & Clinical Governance
All of our clinical fellows will be actively involved in quality improvement initiatives; however, a key aspect of your non-clinical responsibilities will be to oversee and coordinate quality improvement activities throughout the department. You will also take the lead in organising and presenting our departmental QI forums, highlighting best practices and innovative projects.
You will work closely with our leads in clinical governance, QI and morbidity & mortality to identify and compile cases for discussion at local meetings. Additionally, you will be responsible for scheduling and facilitating these meetings, which are vital to our culture of shared learning and continuous improvement. Through this role, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical governance processes, including the analysis of significant adverse events.
Paediatric Emergency Medicine
During the initial six months of this post, you will be based in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Emergency Department, where you will hone your adult emergency medicine skills in a dynamic and progressive environment. Following this, in February 2027, you will transition to the Royal Hospital for Children, undertaking a further six months dedicated to learning and practising the essentials of paediatric emergency medicine. This structured rotation presents an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in emergency medicine at the forefront of both adult and paediatric care, broadening your clinical expertise across diverse patient groups.
Alongside your clinical responsibilities at QEUH, your non-clinical time will be devoted to teaching and spearheading an adolescent quality improvement project, working closely with our dual-accredited adult and paediatric emergency medicine specialist, Dr George Oommen. This role offers invaluable experience in educational leadership and innovation, allowing you to make a tangible impact on adolescent care within the department.
Sub-specialties
The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) serves as a tertiary referral centre for a wide range of specialties, including vascular surgery, stroke medicine, oral and facial maxillofacial surgery (OFMS), and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) services. Additionally, the campus houses a substantial maternity unit, further broadening the spectrum of care we deliver. We take great pride in our unwavering commitment to patient care and the strong collaborative relationships we maintain with each of the specialty teams.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with our specialty liaison leads, actively contributing to specialty-specific quality improvement initiatives, developing and refining clinical guidelines, and delivering targeted teaching sessions tailored to each specialty. Moreover, you will play a pivotal part in designing and implementing in-situ obstetric emergency simulation scenarios, enhancing both preparedness and multidisciplinary learning within the department.
Whilst prior experience in Emergency Medicine is desirable it is not an absolute requirement. Posts are available from August 2026 for a 12-month period. Applicants should have achieved foundation level competencies and have worked for at least 6 months within the NHS (excludes clinical attachments and observership posts).
If you are successful in being shortlisted for interview you will be asked to rank your preferred non-clinical options. We will allocate the non-clinical domains following the interview process.
