An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Medical Physics Expert (Radiotherapy) to join our friendly team of 73 Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists here at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The post is within the Treatment Planning and Imaging section with a focus on day-to-day management of the scientific and operational matters of treatment planning. The post reports to the Scientific Lead – Treatment planning and imaging but the post-holder is expected to take on the majority of the management of the treatment planning service with a high degree of autonomy.
The department has total of 14 linacs (13 operational at any point in time due to continuous replacement program) currently comprising of 13 Varian TrueBeam linacs, 2 of which have HD MLC and one Varian Ethos System. Fully adaptive treatments on Ethos commenced in January 2026. 11 linacs are being replaced within the next 6 years, one planned every 6 months. Treatment planning is performed using Varian Eclipse TPS and doses are independently checked using RadCalc. Approximately 700 treatment plans are produced every month with the vast majority being inverse planned. Various techniques are established in the department including VMAT, IMRT, SABR, TBI, TSE, DIBH, gating, HyperArc and RapidPlan to name a few. But there are also many exciting projects that the post-holder would be expected to lead on, these include: Upgrade or replacement of TPS in Q4 2026, upgrade of replacement of independent dose checker, review of dose calculation algorithms and increasing automation.
The main service is located at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in the heart of West End Glasgow and a satellite centre at Monklands Hospital. The West End is a fantastic place to live famous for the quality and abundance of bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Glasgow Botanical Gardens, Riverside Museum and various other local attractions are within walking distance while numerous lochs and hiking spots are a short drive away. Nearby areas of Bearsden and Milngavie are popular with families.
The successful candidate will be an established MPE with significant experience in treatment planning and a good track record of driving change, improvement and development of new protocols and techniques.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
